Twins Sweep Brewers To Get Back Over .500

The Minnesota Twins got back to their winning ways when the Milwaukee Brewers came to town for a three game series.  The Twins used a variety of ways to find victory during the Tuesday-Thursday series.  Big bats and clutch pitching at the end of games helped Minnesota move to 24-22 on the year.  Gary Gaetti and Al Newman each returned from injuries that kept them out for the past week.  Light-hitting Sal Butera cracked his first homer of the year.  Twins homerun leader, Tom Brunansky, continued to swing a hot bat as well.  The highlight of the series came when the home team won on a walk-off 12th inning hit from Kent Hrbek.

Morris, Trammell Lead Tigers To 3-Game Sweep Over Twins – Puckett Stays Hot

The Minnesota Twins hoped to get some momentum when they started a 3-game set with Detroit – instead they have a losing streak.  Detroit used their big bats, solid rotation, and steady bullpen to sweep the Twins.  Minnesota falls below .500 at 21-22 on the season.  Twins pitching struggled all weekend against Sparky Anderson’s loaded Tiger lineup.  Kirby Puckett was the sole bright spot as Puckett continues to have a career season going out of the gate.  Puckett has played in all 43 games and has 8 doubles, 3 triples, 10 homeruns, 35 runs scored, and is currently batting .335.  Minnesota will try and break their 4-game losing skid on Tuesday when the Milwaukee Brewers come to town.

Twins Slug Past Indians 8-4, Gaetti and Newman Injured

The Minnesota Twins used their big bats to defeat the Cleveland Indians at Municpal Stadium in the first game of a three game series.  The win felt a bit like a loss as the Twins lost Gary Gaetti and Al Newman due to injuries on very similar plays.  Both players were knocked out of the game due to collisions at third base on steal attempts from Indian runners.  Manager Tom Kelly thinks the plays were dirty and hinted at possible retaliation stating that he wouldn’t be shocked if the players find a way to “make things right” tomorrow night.  Kelly was also pleased that 42-year old Steve Carlton proved him right.  Kelly gave Carlton his first start of the season on ‘a hunch’ as Kelly stated afterwards, “Aw hell, it just a game boys…but I have a feeling Lefty really wants this game.  Carlton fired 6+ innings to get the win, thanks in part to homeruns from Kent Hrbek, Don Baylor, and light-hitting Steve Lombardozzi.  Minnesota owns a 20-18 record on the year.  Newman and Gaetti are expected to be out about a week.

Twins Power Their Way Over Toronto 7-3

The Minnesota Twins returned to the friendly confines of the HHH Metrodome last night when the Toronto Blue Jays came to town.  Toronto entered the game on a hot streak while the Twins were fresh off a tough loss in Baltimore.  Minnesota used four homers, including a pair from Gary Gaetti, to build an early lead.  Knuckleballer Joe Niekro and the terrific Twins defense did the rest.  The Blue Jays threatened several innings before Minnesota made key plays to end each late rally.  Manager Tom Kelly was pleased with Niekro’s efforts on the mound stating, “Joe’s knuckleball was dancing tonight.  He competes hard out there and sets the tone for our younger guys.”  Kelly also liked to see the Twins bats come out strong.  Gaetti, Hrbek, and Bruno showed up big for us tonight.  Our reserves have been great as of late, but it’s nice to see our big boppers have a nice night at the plate.” Minnesota now sits at 18-15 and just a half a game out of first place, behind the Royals and Mariners.
